National Dialogue Inches Closer to Finalizing Its Mandate

30th May 2018

After a year of internal deliberations and countrywide grassroots consultative meetings, the National Dialogue Steering Committee has today unveiled a new calendar that is set to carry the peace-making body up to the end of its work this year.

Last week, the National Dialogue 15- sub-committees that went out to conduct consultations in South Sudan and in the Region, wrapped up a month-long phase of presenting the public feedback about what’s needed to end the war and fix the governance crisis in the country. Today, the plenary of the National Dialogue adopted a new schedule that paves the path for the body’s next set of activities, namely the Regional Conferences and the National Conference.

In the interim, the general membership of the Steering Committee would break for a two-month recess from 15 June to 15 August to afford the Secretariat ample time to prepare documents ahead of the conferences.

Regional Conferences

National Dialogue plenary has agreed to hold three regional conferences covering the defunct three regions of Greater Bhar-El-Gazel, Greater Upper Nile and Greater Equatoria to examine emerging issues from the people and to recommend an agenda for the final National Dialogue Conference. The venues of the conferences are set as Juba for Greater Equatoria, Renk for Greater Upper Nile and Wau, for Greater Bhar-El-Gazel and are slated to take place by September. The month of the National Conference and the dates would be fixed once the Regional Conferences conclude. However, November is the tentative date for finalizing the National Conference, which would be attended by delegates from across the nation.
